068 Young

We all have to start somewhere.

This podcast is into its sixty eighth week and it has only just occurred to me to pick the closest theme to home. It also happens to be a word that has turned up a very interesting mix of music!

Duane, Candi, Replacements, and MONKEES all in one podcast?! Fabulouso! You guys all rock. And I dig that Men Without Hats tune, too!

Aw, I’ve done it again! I skipped a podcast thinking “Someone else will already have chosen Young Marble Giants”… Still, great selection everyone. Esp Duane & Jonathan - always welcome to my ears.

Oh dear - did you want subtle? I’d better re-record then…

SAS - I just bought Colossal Youth, great album !!! Altho i was probably 2 when it came out.

Never heard of SomeYoungPedro, so thanxs for that one Colin. So many good choices on this one, nice one Tim, you da man !!!

ps, i still need to listen to all of the Elvis one (sorry marcy) my pc at work is abit crap so it kept stopping and starting ect…on the buffer thing. Think i’m gonna start downloading them and stick em on my ipod, so no more excuses, ha

Rock on !!!

Man, that was a raucous little podcast. I felt like rebelling against authority throughout the entire thing. A successful “Young” podcast, if you ask me!

I enjoyed the Candi Staton story. It would have gone well with my choice (but alas, it was too obvious and I was far too lazy this week) of The Killers “When You Were Young.” I really dug the Jonathan Richman, Replacements, and Pooh Sticks (forgive my musical ignorance, Sid, but did their name refer to Winnie the Pooh, defication on a stick, or something else?). And thank you Mark for the excellent choice of Elbow (that was the first Elbow I song by happenstance. The radio was on NPR while I was feeding a friend’s cat and that first line just grabs you in a headlock and never lets go). And I didn’t hate that Sonic Youth song Nat (thank goodness there was no three minute feedback/white noise expermination). Oh, and I loved the Boy Sets Fire track! Excellent work all.

ross–that’s how i usually do it. it’s very hard to sit in front of the computer for an hour and not be interrupted.

in fact, i’ve not yet listened to this one–and i feel guilty, too!

Alex,
here you can find out the true meaning of Poohsticks

Or perhaps not - I tried to post a link to the Poohsticks page on wikipedia - didn’t work.
It was a game played by Winne-the-Pooh and his friends, it involved throwing sticks off a bridge into a stream, then crossing over to the down stream side of the bridge to see which stick has won.

[…] I’m trying to kill two birds with one stone with this podcast.  Firstly, I am throwing in a couple of songs that I wanted to put on the Contrast Podcast episode entitled Young a few weeks ago.  I was away at my brother’s wedding at the time, and I never got the chance so here they are. […]
