FiL, no WAY Pink Floyd were henchmen of Wakeman! NOw, I might lump Emerson, Lake, and Palmer in there, but not Floyd.
But, I did lurve the story you told!! Sir Cliff Richard! Fab!!

I’m talking to myself again, but this is THE BEST one yet, folks. Fantastic music and great intros. And Lyle, whatever it is you’re taking, I’d like some.

Dearest Nats, while I fully recognize that history can be viewed and written from many viewpoints, I fear the record is quite clear: Pink Floyd was firmly in the perfidious Progrock camp. Evidence: Animals, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here. As proggy as it comes.
Now Sir Cliff’s association with the Progrock Empire is not so widely known. Indeed, the alliance was a clandestine one, codified by the secret Richards-Wakeman pact signed in the ostensibly neutral territory of Barry Manilow’s Californian mansion. I only became aware of its existence when I found an admittedly faded and damp copy of the agreement in the alley behind my house. It bears a curious resemblance to our local grocery store’s weekly sale circular, but thanks to my razor sharp powers of deduction identified it for what it really is.

Ok, point taken, but no way they were HENCHMEN, dear FiL. THey were leaders, man, leaders. And they are the only prog/art band that I can stomach, probably since they started out all psychedelic when Syd was still a force to behold. Ok, I lied. I dig some early Genesis, too. But once Yes and ELP became all that and a bag of chips, it got out of hand.
For that matter, whenever any trend gets all bloated and out of hand, it’s time to shake it up like the punks did. I grew very tired of the late-90’s/early 00’s punk-pop offerings a la Newfound Glory/Blink 182/Weezer/Green Day (although Green Day matured nicely.) I danced for joy when The White Stripes iced their butts and shoved a little blues rock in those kids’ faces!
Anyway…rant over. Almost. The proggy kids of the late-60’s/early 70’s were just doing that same thing. As a teen in that time, I think we were getting tired of all that Woodstock-era stuff and wanted something new to amaze us!

*FiL puts on straight face*
Dearest Nats, I’m happy to admit straight up that progrock says nothing to me about my life. But I’m equally happy, if not adamant, to declare that that’s MY reaction to it. All music has its cultural context, each as basically valid as the next. *FiL discards straight face* With the obvious exception of Celine Dion. *FiL puts straight face back on* Put differently, with very little exception, I don’t like progrock, but that’s MY problem.
P.S. I’m with you on Blink 182 & all that!

P.S. I’m also happy to revise my characterization of Floyd from henchman to part of the inner court. Perhaps akin to Louis XIV’s Cardinal Richelieu…
By FiL on 09.19.07 3:56 pm
Erratum: For Louis XIV read Louis XIII. Early Modern is not my period of expertise; I’m more of a contemporary historian…
By FiL on 09.19.07 4:00 pm
;) Of course!
By nat on 09.19.07 7:32 pm
FiL puts on a straight face? WHAT? Don’t ever do that again, man. Ever.
And not liking progrock isn’t your problem, it’s your perogative! (Hey, I don’t like speed metal or death metal or rap, and that’s my perogative.)

With all this talk of “my prerogative” I’m coming over all Bobby Brown. Come back Whitney, all is forgiven…
A lovely podcast! And believe not Agent Mentok: he has ulterior motives…

I loved this episode.
Kept me up late into the night when I should’ve been getting my beauty sleep.
