With the Superbowl coming this weekend Rick from Are you embarrassed easily thought it would be fun for us to dig out lots of songs about football and all it’s wonderful ball based joy. Nice.

I’m having trouble getting past “ball based joy.”
By nat on 01.28.09 2:44 am
And the Obsidian Oblong for Off-Topic Oration goes to…?
By Eiron Page on 01.28.09 3:13 am
Rio Ferdinand, the eventual focus of my intro, is - for those unaware - a Manchester United centre-back and vice-captain of the England national team. Just in case you thought I’d really lost it this week.
By Eiron Page on 01.28.09 3:17 am
I was too slack to put in this week.
I do however want to say this:
CARN THE MIGHTY PIES!!!
2009: The year of the Magpie
By Agnes on 01.28.09 3:18 am
Final thing to add, before I stop comment-spamming for the night, is the source of my ramblings. It comes from an old entry I wrote in this blog, which is getting a little more attention than my “grown-up” blog at the moment.

Where’s Hoddle and Waddle

That Andy Griffith bit reminds me of my dad, since he owned the recording. He got mad when we little imps played it so much that it got horribly scratched.
This is what I love about the CP: you never know what you’re going to hear!
By nat on 01.28.09 2:33 pm
agnes, are you speaking a different language? coz i don’t really understand . . .
By mjrc on 01.28.09 4:42 pm
I think it’s some Aussie cheer. I don’ t know. They “talk funny” in other countries, marcy.
By nat on 01.28.09 5:13 pm
lol! apparently they do!
By mjrc on 01.28.09 6:49 pm
Marcy - I’m so glad that you submitted an All-time Quarterback song. I really considered submitting something by them (him?) but your submission had so much more meaning behind it!
I really enjoyed this episode, even if there were some crazy bits.
Also, Eiron, I hope you know that you have me beat in terms of holding the dorkish crown. I have to work on having an intro where I spout off decimals and results of experimentation
By James! on 01.28.09 9:34 pm
That’s why I wish I’d gotten off my butt in time to contribute. You all have a lot to learn about REAL footy…
By Agnes on 01.28.09 9:38 pm
Ahh pressed the wrong button! Here’s the rest of that comment…
Nat, Marcy, very entertaining, loved it!
Down here it’s all about AFL. Or rugby if you’re from the north, but we won’t talk about that, cos that’s not real footy either.
I go for a team that is both the most loved and the most hated here in Oz - the Collingwood Magpies.
We haven’t won the flag since 1990, though we did make 2 finals in a row a few years ago - we lost both of them to the Brisbane Lions (a bloody interstate team!!) and the scars are yet to fade.
What makes AFL real footy, I hear you say? Our boys don’t wear helmets and shoulder pads. And when someone tackles them (or indeed, maybe just runs within a foot of them, or breathes on them or something) they don’t drop instantly to the ground, rolling around grabbing some random body part and crying to the ref.
AFL: the sport of men.
By Agnes on 01.28.09 9:47 pm
I thought chasing skirts was the sport of men?!
By nat on 01.28.09 9:57 pm
..or at least…straight men.
By nat on 01.28.09 9:57 pm
You’re full of the oneliners today Nat!
Keep em coming…
By Agnes on 01.28.09 10:03 pm
Nat - Now THAT’S a sport.
But women aren’t objects. Don’t kill me.
By James! on 01.28.09 10:10 pm
My only question is, now what will we have for a theme for episode 442?
By Stuart on 01.28.09 10:40 pm
Yeah?! And why wasn’t #147 about snooker?
By Eiron Page on 01.28.09 11:51 pm
Now, let’s see. It’s taken nearly three years to get to episode 148, so we’ll be at epi 442 right around 2015. Will there still be internet then?
By nat on 01.29.09 12:11 am
We’ll all submit to the CP using telepathy.
By James! on 01.29.09 12:30 am
Eiron - That’s an easy one to answer. It’s a two word answer in fact .. ’snooker loopy’. I rest my case.
By Tim on 01.29.09 1:06 am
… and just in case that doesn’t make sense here is a link
By Tim on 01.29.09 1:08 am
Tim, that LINK! It’s so bad, it’s good!
By nat on 01.29.09 1:21 am
I didn’t click on it. I know well enough that when the word “Snooker” is placed alongside the word “Loopy” only bad things can happen. I have been exposed to that track before; it’s so bad, it’s awful.
By Eiron Page on 01.29.09 3:22 am
Which brings me to another of my peeves: appending mundane activities or objects with the word “mania” as if this in itself will make them exciting, deridedly making whatever it is sound more like a mental condition in the process. The Beatles can pull it off, because the fanaticism was akin to a state of euphoric madness (loss of self-awareness, dizziness, etc.). Wrestlemania I’ll let by as a genuine illness too. But some things are unforgivable.
By Eiron Page on 01.29.09 3:40 am
I’m quite sad that after two days no-one has picked up on the fact that our good friend ZB makes an appearance on the Scotland World Cup Squad song about 28 seconds in….
By jc on 01.29.09 9:22 am
I’m still catching up on a few previous episodes! I’ll pick up on the fact when you’re all thanking your deities, the stars, or whatever else is appropriate that I’m keeping my intro short in next week’s episode.
By Eiron Page on 01.29.09 10:19 am
‘The Len Ganley Stance’ by Half Man half Biscuit? ‘That Was A Helluva Break By Ray Reardon’ by the Orphans of Babylon?
Great episode and I absolutely love the Hitchers’ song.
By adam on 01.29.09 12:01 pm
Yes .. but the risk of ‘Snooker Loopy’ making a showing is too high. We just can’t take chances like that I’m afraid.
Oh, and I love that Hitchers song too. I now intend to always reply to the question ‘what are you watching’ with the response ‘a programme about art’.
By tim.young on 01.29.09 12:30 pm
it’s a shame episode 144 couldn’t have just been called ‘Gross’. Can we have a ‘Gross’ podcast soon anyway?
By adam on 01.29.09 12:32 pm
There’s a lot of talk of food on the Book o’ Face lately. We should have a cookery-themed ‘cast!
By Eiron Page on 01.29.09 1:11 pm
First time post…
Hitchers- Sensational
Bohemian Rhapsody- Pure Genius
By Pedro on 01.29.09 1:48 pm
All, great podcast. I have no idea what Snooker Loopy is all about, but it sounds NSFW, so I’ll have to be disgusted later I suppose.
mjrc, thanks for reminding Agnes that not all of us speak the language. When I think of a Mighty Pie, I’m either looking at a dessert or a cow pasture.
Tim, kudos to you for whipping up a delightful intro. Speaking of food, that chicken turned out quite nicely last weekend, thank you.
I second a food CP theme, as well as gross. Perhaps we could combine them?
By Rick on 01.29.09 1:48 pm
Snooker Looper is not NSFW, as such. But you might not want anybody to be around if you do play it. Including yourself.
By Eiron Page on 01.29.09 2:03 pm
Or even Loopy. What was I thinking?
By Eiron Page on 01.29.09 7:23 pm
Dylan’s Hurricane is another good shout for the Snooker Theme That Should Never Be.
By Stuart on 01.30.09 1:55 am
Somebody in this podcast is in a tournament-winning team, having stayed on top of their league table this week, but she’s not telling.
By Eiron Page on 02.02.09 11:20 am
I found JC’s and Stuart’s songs to be completely captivating. Really good listening.
By Tricia on 02.03.09 9:54 pm
Thanks for taking the time to check out my stuff.
I’m interested in what you said about how I should “come and take part”. How do I go about doing so?
