154 Songs which offer advice

The doctor is in.

The theme for this episode was thought up by Tricia who has asked us to find some songs that offer advice. My advice would be to put aside your woes and enjoy some lovely musical variety! Hurrah.

I advise you all that I’m listening to this late at night as I can’t sleep, and therefore I have the time to make this a very long comment…

Great intro Tricia and JC! Very nice.

Tart - top intro, and I really enjoyed the Nada Surf tune too, good one!

(Phosphorous) Chris - another great choice. Top advice, regardless of age I reckon!

(Culture Bully) Chris - gosh yes! Extremely sound advice.

Dirk - duly noted!

Rob - so the best is already behind us? That is indeed a worry!

John Q - that’s probably the most concise and helpful advice I’ve heard in a long time. Seriously.

James - I enjoyed your intro, think we’ve probably all been there at some point.

Peter - loved the Bobby Conn tune, those strings are fantastic. Was halfway through before I realised what the lyrics were though!

Sorry about the essay folks, but there are worse ways to burn the midnight oil. Night!

Agnes thanks for listening to the words - they are the best bit of it really, as you would know - your selection is epic like a story.

Also, compliments to Tricia on the idea - (it’s time to get yourself a blog don’t you think? They’re free-ish you know.)

And cheers to JC - the best part of it was hearing you pronounce ‘ Bourgie Bourgie’.

Lastly, I must admit I don’t think I learned a thing, this’ll be on repeat till that happens.

great theme, tricia. of course i wish i were in it!!

tart, when you started speaking, i was like, who IS this?? i was listening in the car and at the gym so had no playlist to refer to!

taylor, it’s been a long time since i’ve said this, but it was good to hear some billy joel!

poor mrs. worthington’s daughter. :(

chris (phos.)–my first choice would have been “don’t let him waste your time,” so i’m really glad someone else picked it.

greer–you are single-handedly educating me in the genre of hip hop. normally i would shy away from it but honest to god, every song you pick is so good! thanks. : )

dirk–i had to laugh at that advice! then i thought, well maybe i’d just invest in some waterproof mascara . . . ;-)

the in crowd–i might have heard this song live back in the day, as they played at a wedding i went to in 1989. how cool that they’re still around!

nat–that wilson pickett hit the spot!

fil–that was an excellent song, and excellent advice as well!

i also thought of submitting “thou shalt always kill” by dan le sac vs. scroobius pip, but i thought it was too obvious–apparently not?

p.s. i enjoyed hearing jc say “bourgie bourgie” too.

crap! i always forget something. tim–i picked the same picture for my post!!

LOL, I might as well join in with the jc praise..that was COOL to hear!

as was the advice…now BEHAVE everyone.

Conrad! I love that song, great memory jog, thanks!

Tricia, great theme this week and JC, you know that voice of yours… slays me, baby! You could read the water bill and I’d swoon. Great song choice too, xoxox

Awesome intro, Chris(Phosphorous.net)! The wife and I laughed out loud in the car, ha!

Sage advice on that Johnny Cash tune there, Chris (Culture Bully), well done.

Greer — LOVE it! (as long as it applies to us ladies as well, hahahha)

Adam, Ian Dury is always a propos to any theme, in my book.

Agnes, I must remember to keep that one in mind! and great tune!

Dirk, I only ever love unmarried men (shhhh! ok, that’s a lie, hahah)

Rob-that’s depressing as hell, Rhinnah-thanks for introducing me to a new band! James, I don’t know why I don’t listen to Less than Jake more often, thanks for adding that to the mix. Peter, if you keep playing that kinda stuff you could soon be my fave, I’m just sayin’ xx. Natalie, that advice really scares me! hahha But Wilson Pickett is just so right-on, thanks! Linda, that’s a gorgeous song, and not one I’ve heard before.

Dearest FiL, why must you find the perfect song for my day? (I’ll tell ya why later) wonderful, darling, thanks bunches xx

What a cast this was, whew!
xoxo,
Tart

Just flicked on Music Max to see that they were counting down the top 13 ‘Songs With Advice’. I only saw Madonna’s ‘Express Yourself’ (#6) and the godawful travesty that is Natalie Bassingtwaite & Shannon Noll covering ‘Don’t Give Up’ (#5). Tricia, I hope you’re demanding royalties!

Argghh. Eiron! I’ve got the bloody ‘cheque is in the mail’ song stuck in my head!!!

MJRC & Tart - well, no one ever said it would be easy….

FiL - Love the Divine Comedy, and love the original, but i’ve never heard this brilliant cover version before, thanks!

Then, Tim, my work has been done. Who knew that I of all people would actually submit something so infectious?

I loved this episode.

Tart, I’m on a Nada Surf kick so that tune fit the bill perfectly.

Dirk, great tune and I’ve learned to keep it waterproof no matter the situation.

John, if music collections were our children I would definitely want mine to get married to yours so I could have all those great tunes you play in my family!

The Jarvis Cocker was terrific and I likewise was feeling pretty awful for Mrs. Worthington’s daughter (and son).

James, I could totally relate to your intros and songs from last week and this week. Even good break-ups are not so good. Luckily, there is music to get us through.

FiL, your intro to end the podcast couldn’t have been more perfect (song as well). Doesn’t mean I won’t still try to eat my head size worth of cheese or chocolate when given the delicious chance.

Nat, from one mother to another….I hear you!!

And, JC, thanks for your advice as always.

All i can say is, what a wicked show, enjoyed ever track!!! Tim your song cracked me up Rossy:)

i enjoyed every track…agghh..doh..to much red wine :)

I was *this* close to getting Prodigy’s Charly for this one. Ah well. I quite like the Schoolhouse Rock track.

I just got around to listen to the first seven tunes, but Tricia’s way of pronouncing ‘Bourgie Bourgie’ already made my day: perfect!!!!

Any show that features Bourgie Bourgie doing Breaking Point is always going to be fine by me…but this was a truly exceptional CP by any standards.

Jarvis cheek by jowl with Billy Joel and Kenneth Williams??? There’s no radio station anywhere in the world would be so daring.

Some great stuff that was new to me….particularly loved The Dawn Parade. Thanks John

Everyone’s intros this week were hugely enjoyable….but special mention has to go to Peter for not spoiling what was to follow in the song. Catchy and rude. Magnifique!

And FiL…..if I write all those down, will I get my PhD in Philosophy from Yale?

PS : Apologies in advance for missing out on the Mountains podcast…but I will tune in.

Ok, so I have to ask it because I am not at ALL familiar with Give ‘Em Enough Rope. Is it anyone’s favorite Clash album? I think mine is probably, very predictably, London Calling. It feels like the perfect mesh of the other two Clash albums I have (S/T and Combat Rock).

There are some of us dearest James who prefer the raw eneergy of the debut LP.

I can dig it :)

Dear James,

I don’t want to sound pedantic, but there were more other official Clash-albums than the three you mention: ‘Sandinista’ and ‘Cut The Crap’. It’s hard to tell whether the first one or ‘London Calling’ is better: I always thought they’re so different to each other that they simply shouldn’t be compared … ‘Give ‘em Enough Rope’ though is a great record, but it neither reaches the quality of the debut album nor the one of ‘London Calling’ … well, that’s what I would say at least …

Dearest Dirk,

I was just commenting on the three I happen to have. Actually, I recently also got “From Here to Eternity”, one of the live compilation discs, but that didn’t factor into my thinking. I was just asking based on what i knew :)
