159 The best of 2009 so far (part 1)

Here at Contrast Podcast headquarters we pride ourselves on knowing what is good. Chocolate eggs are good but not if you eat too many at once … and new music is good but not if you gorge your ears to the point of joyful explosion. That is why we have split our opinions on the best music of the year so far into two!

Cheers Tim, glad PJ & John are on there–one of my favorites of the year, for sure.

I love The pains of being pure at heart FiL. I also was really enjoying Fanfarlo as well as Animal Collective, I am with you Steve that track is epic. Robyn Hitchcock is amazing indeed. JC, I loved Oh men! :-)
Great submissions all around! Thanks!

Greer - I did EXACTLY the same thing when I saw Lost in Translation and heard Too Young. I can’t remember any song I’ve fallen for so hard and so suddenly. Great choice - fingers crossed the new album has more songs of of Too Young and 1901’s calibre!

DAMN, I’d better get buying. SO much great stuff on this ‘cast. I love Other Lives, THe Pains of Being Pure At Heart, and PJ Harvey, and ..on and on…this whole thing blew me away. Great job, everyone, and I can hardly wait for part II, which I will listen to while I’m away from home next week.

i love that we all listen to different stuff. it makes it so much easier to keep up with all the new music that flows so fast!

i loved the pj, phoenix, squarepusher (not heard of them before), wavves, robyn hitchcock and other lives. and i liked everything else!

great job, tim. i love how you’ve parceled it out. and now i’m excited for what we’ll be hearing next week, too!

So whose basement can I stay in when I get kicked out of my house for spending all our money on CD’s? The CP Nation is full of pushers of my favorite drug. :)

you’ve got plenty of blood, right? all you need to do to support your habit is sell your plasma. ;-)

Thanks Marcy! You’re always looking out for me :)

plus you’ll be doing a good deed in the process, so you can start buying all those cds guilt free right away!

Greer! I had no idea that Phoenix sang that song… I saw them on SNL and thought they sucked royally, hahah. I love that tune, thanks!
And Marcy you are genius :) I’m in the same predicament and even more so as there are so many gigs I want to go to. JC we might have to start a home for displaced music lovers, eh? I’m enjoying what all of you think is the “best” but I have to agree with Vic, “Nasty Tasty” is the bestest! Although Bob’s Wavves song is close! Makes me wish I had seen them when I had the chance, damn.
I have this really bad habit of not listening to bands that are super hyped, so I was pleasantly surprised by Animal Collective. That’s what’s so beautiful about this podcast! And JC, darlin… you sold it to me again xx

I agree that Phoenix’s SNL performance felt lacking, but I was very impressed with this track, Greer! I think it’s fair to say that SNL’s musical performances are hit or miss.

I really liked Nasty Tasty and the Squarepusher, too! Every song on this episode was so good!

That’s too bad about the SNL performance. I missed it but I’ll see if it’s on YouTube… I’ve never seen them live so no idea if they just are not that good or if that was an SNL thing.

And Diana, it’s so funny you did the same thing! Luckily it’s a good soundtrack (or I thought so anyway). I then went and bought United too… it is a drug!

Tart- I passed on Animal Collective for the same reason and now I see I shouldn’t have.

I really really enjoyed this one, I’m just about to play it again. I liked every single song and there’s lots for me to check out further. I wholeheartedly agree with what Marcy wrote above about all of us listening to different stuff- it’s so great. Thanks so much everyone!

Dirk- your intro made me laugh. I feel ya :) .

i saw phoenix on snl and i thought they were really good! but then again, i have a thing for french fellows who sing in english . . . something about that trace of an accent. : )

i agree, tho, that snl musical acts are pretty hit or miss. i tend to like the ones by bands i don’t know better than the ones i do. lower expectations, i guess.

Thanks for putting this together, Tim! Oy, I hope I pronounced Orchestrii right. :p

Hmm…I wonder if I would feel differently if I watched the SNL thing again. You’re absolutely right, Marcy, about the expectation thing. I’ve gotten into several bands from seeing them on SNL (Arctic Monkeys, My Morning Jacket) but maybe only Nirvana’s Heart Shaped Box cemented an already growing love.

Greer- Were you able to locate a video on YouTube?

I can still remember seeing that new act, Elvis Costello, on SNL….damn, I’m old.

Not on YouTube but nbc.com has it. I liked it a lot, but maybe they were a little too mellow for some?

Oh they’re French? Well that explains it then! And I will never forget falling in love with Ricky Lee Jones on SNL as she slid off the stool, mic in hand, stoned out of her mind :) so there, Nat :p

All morning, while we were putting down mulch, i was singing “Who put the pudding, who put the pudding, who put the pudding in the punim” :) (Or however you spell that)

Tart, I remember that, too!

Bravo! That was one great listen. I enjoyed all, but especially liked Aidan Moffat, Helen Love, Cats On Fire (John your submissions always speak to me), Fanfarlo (catchy) and Robyn Hitchcock (always great).

The surprise hit for me was Nasty Tasty. Can’t get it out of my mind.

Oh! And I really loved the song Black Tables.

I’m feeling very in touch with 2009.
